Tips to let our ESL students Recognize New Words

BINGO

Bingo is a highly adaptable game frequently used by ESL teachers. For younger learners, the bingo cards should feature illustrations, and the teacher can call out each word. For students who can read, the cards should have words instead of pictures, and the teacher should draw flashcards from a bag. Teenagers or adult learners can be given cards with definitions and asked to guess the corresponding word, or vice versa.

MATCHING

Matching is another type of exercise that offers endless possibilities. Students can be asked to match words with their opposites or synonyms, or match words with their definitions, as well as matching pictures to words.

FILL IN THE BLANKS

Fill in the blanks (with options). Distribute a written piece (such as a description, song, letter, or short story) with blank spaces that must be filled in from a list of words. This exercise can be adapted to longer texts and also include longer word lists.
