REINFORCING VOCABULARY
DESCRIPTION ACTIVITIES
Description activities can help students utilize new vocabulary, whether it be through oral or written tasks. Students can describe various topics, such as a recent event or a personal trip, with or without specific guidance. The guidance could include using at least five adjectives or words related to a particular theme, such as sports or weather.
BLANK FILL-INS
Blank fill-ins can be used to challenge students to fill in the missing words with any suitable option. Indications such as “noun,” “adjective,” or “adverb” can be given to advanced students. Comparing the different words used to fill in the blanks can lead to further discussion and learning.
MIND MAPS
Mind maps or brainstorming sessions can also be used to reinforce vocabulary. For instance, the teacher can ask students to come up with words to describe the weather and write “weather” at the center of the board. Students can suggest words such as “chilly,” “scorching,” or “mild,” and these words can be written as sub-circles branching out from the center circle. Sub-circles can also be added for different seasons, such as winter or summer. This activity can work well as a review lesson.
