MEMORY

 

A memory type card game may also be an efficient approach to review vocabulary, but you or your class will need to prepare ahead of time. For the terminology you wish to review, you’ll need a deck of cards. One card should have the target vocabulary word and another card should contain the meaning of the term. The players should then mix the deck and arrange the cards face down in a grid layout on a big playing surface. Each individual takes turns turning over two cards in an attempt to locate a match. If the cards do not match, he flips them over and the next person has their turn. If they do, he keeps the cards and gets another round. The person with the most cards at the conclusion of the game wins. This game may be modified to practice matching words with their synonyms or antonyms. Instead of matching the definition card to the vocabulary card, use a card with either a synonym or an antonym printed on it for each.

 

CHARADES

 

While reviewing vocabulary in your ESL class, charades is a fun and dynamic game to play. When your kids’ acting abilities are put to the test for their classmates, they will be energetic and eager. With little little planning, you may have a charade vocabulary review ready for your students at nearly any time and on short notice. Keeping a collection of vocabulary cards for the terms your class has covered is the simplest method to be ready at any moment. Divide your students into two teams when you’re ready to play. People will take turns acting out one of the words from the prepared cards. During their turns, they will choose this card at random and have 2 minutes to get their team to identify the word without consulting books or notes. The performer is not allowed to make any noises and must communicate only via his or her motions. Any responses that spring to mind should be shouted out by the rest of the squad. A point is awarded if the team correctly guesses the word within the time limit. If the team has not successfully answered the word after two minutes, the opposite team has one more opportunity. If they are accurate, they receive a point and proceed with their round. Continue playing until you either run out of time or words. The team with the highest score at the end of the game wins.

 

PICTIONARY

 

Pictionary is a comparable and as enjoyable game for vocabulary learning. The rules are similar to those of charades, however the clue provider is only allowed to sketch on the white board in front of the class instead of acting out the word. He is not allowed to use any symbols, numbers, or letters in his artwork. Allow each participant two minutes to try to convince his colleagues to guess the word. If he fails, offer the other side a chance to guess. Score the game in the same manner you would charades, and proclaim the victorious team at the conclusion.
