As an Online ESL teacher, we can encourage our students to learn vocabulary in many ways!
When it comes to vocabulary learning, most ESL students turn to television, but television has more to offer than the typical sitcom lexicon. Students who have access to cable television may be able to find a channel on any subject of interest to them. Motivate your students to watch less well-known channels or shows, especially ones that are relevant to their field of study. Animal Planet, Science, and even QVC are all channels that will expose your students to vocabulary that they may not encounter elsewhere.
According to Ask.com, the average person spends 45-62 minutes per day waiting. When it comes to vocabulary learning, all of the time your students spend in line at the cafeteria, a coffee shop, or for an elevator can be put to good use. Encourage your students to engage in some light-hearted listening. Their vocabulary will be stretched and expanded as they listen in on real conversations with native speakers, which will also improve their ability to understand what is being said.
