Techniques in teaching New Vocabulary.

There are techniques we can use to introduce new vocabulary to students. Enjoy the first one below!

WORD ROOTS

Educating your ESL students on word roots will help them acquire not just current but also future vocabulary. Unfamiliar words may be broken into familiar pieces when pupils comprehend the meanings of the building blocks. You may occasionally find lists of word origins and their meanings in dictionaries, or you can search for them online. There are two types of word roots. You can teach roots that provide content meaning such as ant- (against such as antonym, antithesis), -phobia (fear of such as xenophobia, triskaidekaphobia), or mal- (bad such as malnutrition, malcontent). You may also teach word roots that indicate the grammatical function of the word, such as -ly (adv. such as slowly, elegantly), -tion (n. such as administration, frustration), and -or (n. a person, such as a professor or a councilor) and -ful (adj. such as wonderful, beautiful). Along with teaching your ESL Students about word origins, you may want to go over the notion of prefix (a unit of meaning added to the beginning of a word that affects the meaning or grammatical function) and suffix (a unit of meaning added to the end of the word that changes the meaning or function). As a teacher, you should be aware that some languages utilize infixes (a unit of meaning added to the middle of a word that modifies its meaning or function), but English does not.
