WORDS IN CONTEXT

Another technique to teach new vocabulary is to give your ESL students phrases or a brief essay that includes the new vocabulary items. Then, depending on the context, check if they can determine the part of speech and the meaning of the word. This is a tactic that even native speakers utilize unwittingly when encountering unfamiliar words. To teach the ability of inference, you may also use the following technique: give them a text that has many instances of the same term. Replace the term with a symbol, XXXX, or another representation when creating the handout for them.

ESL Students will have to deduce the meaning of the missing term without the real word or the assistance of a dictionary. This is a vital skill to master in any language. Make it clear to your ESL students that they can learn to infer meaning if they practice, will study languages more like a natural speaker and will feel more at ease when confronted with foreign words.
